Yi Gao is a Research Fellow at AbbVie leading a group of formulation scientists to develop late-stage commercial formulations for small molecule drugs. Yi Gao earned B.S. and M.S. in Pharmacy from China Pharmaceutical University and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Loyola University Chicago. She joined Abbott/AbbVie in 1992. During her 33-year tenure at Abbott/AbbVie, Yi has pursued her interests in research frontiers of improving solubility, dissolution, and bioavailability of drug products, in particular by applying amorphous solid dispersions and lipid-based drug delivery systems. She is an inventor and co-inventor of over 60 granted patents and patent applications; has authored and co-authored 46 research papers and book chapters. Yi serves as Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) for Molecular Pharmaceutics, and Scientific Advisor to the Editors (SAEs) for Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Multiple papers have received honors, including AAPS Pharmaceutical Research Meritorious Manuscript Award in 2012, “Most Original and Most Significant Scientific Findings” by J. Pharm. Sci. in 2015 (twice) and 2018, and “Featured Articles in Suryanarayanan Dedicated Issue of J. Pharm. Sci.” in 2023. She was elected as Fellow of AAPS in 2024.
