Director, Toxicology, PCRM
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
Durham, North Carolina
Dr. Shagun Krishna is the Director of Toxicology at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, where she leads efforts to advance human-relevant, mechanism-based approaches such as in vitro, in silico, and IVIVE/PBPK modeling strategies to replace animal testing in regulatory toxicology. She collaborates with international and U.S. regulatory bodies, including the OECD, NICEATM, and FDA, to promote the use of non-animal test strategies in biomedical research and regulatory decision-making.
Previously, Dr. Krishna was a scientist at NICEATM, contributing to the Cardiovascular Health Effects Innovation Initiative. Her work involved building AI-assisted pipelines for cardiotoxicity assessment, interpreting Tox21/ToxCast data, and developing QSAR and machine learning models for CV endpoints. She continues to lead projects on IVIVE using PBPK models, literature mapping of environmental chemicals linked to cardiovascular outcomes, and AOP development.
Dr. Krishna earned her MSc in Bioinformatics from Banaras Hindu University and a PhD in Cheminformatics from CSIR-CDRI, India, where she focused on cancer epigenetics and computational toxicology.
Her contributions have been recognized by awards including the 2022 Lush Young Researcher Prize, HESI Early Career Award, and SOT’s Yves Alarie Diversity Award. She is an active member of SOT and ASCCT, advocating for a future of smarter, ethical, and human-specific toxicology.
