Stephen Previs, PhD, brings nearly 35 years of expertise in metabolic biochemistry, specializing in stable isotope tracer methods and mass spectrometry. His work began in the field of inborn error screening and clinical diagnostics before earning his PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry. His career was largely split between academia (~ 9 years faculty at Case Western Reserve University) and industry (~ 15 years at Merck) where he was involved in studies surrounding cardiometabolic diseases and nutrient partitioning. Steve has applied isotope kinetics to understand how dietary factors influence pathway activity and explore drug mechanisms, target engagement, and pharmacodynamics; his studies at Merck spanned therapeutic areas, influencing early development and clinical candidate support. Now at PharmaCadence Analytical Services, he continues to refine his approaches to studying metabolic physiology and biochemical regulation. An accomplished researcher and educator, Steve has published extensively and is frequently invited to present at scientific events. His translational research integrates in vivo, cellular, and cell-free systems, enabling in-depth exploration of physiological mechanisms and drug action throughout the drug development pipeline.
