Brandon T. Ruotolo is Professor and Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Michigan. He also directs the UM Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility and is affiliated with the Department of Biological Chemistry and the Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics Program in the UM Medical School. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Saint Louis University (1999) and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University (2004) under David H. Russell, followed by postdoctoral work with Dame Carol V. Robinson at the University of Cambridge. In 2009, Ruotolo joined the University of Michigan to begin his independent research career. His lab focuses on advancing structural biology and drug discovery using ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS). Key contributions include the development of collision induced unfolding (CIU) technology for protein-ligand complex analysis, novel software tools for IM-MS and CIU data, and studies on amyloid-related proteins and drug interactions. Ruotolo has published over 175 peer-reviewed papers and received numerous awards, including the ASMS Research Award (2011), NSF CAREER Award (2013), Protein Science Young Investigator Award (2018), Biemann Medal (2023), and Ken Standing Award (2024).
