Director of the Centre of Excellence for Long-acting Therapeutics
University of Liverpool
Steve Rannard holds a personal Chair in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool. He is a Director of the Centre of Excellence for Long-acting Therapeutics (CELT), Director of the UK National Hub for Advanced Long-acting Therapeutics (HALo), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
His research focusses materials science towards unmet medicine needs, including the development of novel/scalable nanoparticle platform technologies for solid drug nanoparticle (SDN) formulation - outputs have included the first human evaluation of orally dosed SDN formulations for HIV therapies. Ongoing collaborative studies, funded by Unitaid, aim to generate candidate long-acting injectable formulations for latent tuberculosis infection and hepatitis-C with human evaluation and later implementation in low- and middle-income countries. As the Director of CELT, he leads a national programme aiming to drive long-acting therapeutics as a key strategic activty within the UK. Having spent 16 years in industry, Professor Rannard has a clear goal of applying research outcomes to product benefits and a broad background of polymer, organic nanoparticle and materials sciences. He has led the creation of four spin-out companies, is coinventor of >100 patent families, and has authored >200 research papers, book chapters, and review articles.
