Lindsey Williams is a Ph.D. candidate in Pharmaceutics at the University of Washington, where she develops advanced oral drug delivery systems targeting the gut-CNS axis under the mentorship of Dr. Shijie Cao. Her doctoral research focuses on engineering polymeric nano-prodrugs of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) to achieve sustained, distal gut-targeted delivery for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. She has established a robust synthesis platform to generate these nano-prodrugs, characterized formulation-performance relationships in vivo, and constructed physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models describing nanoparticle transit, release, and absorption. Her work aims to elucidate mechanisms by which gut-delivered microbial metabolites be harnessed to ameliorate CNS autoimmunity.
Prior to her Ph.D., Lindsey conducted translational research at the Seattle Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she contributed to studies demonstrating blood-brain barrier (BBB) transport of the SARS-CoV-2 S1 protein and mechanisms of Alzheimer’s-related BBB dysfunction using a human iPSC-derived model. She has authored peer-reviewed publications in Nature Neuroscience, Fluids and Barriers of the CNS, and Pharmacology & Therapeutics and serves as the Chair of the University of Washington AAPS Student Chapter.
