Dr. Flavia Sousa is an Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator at the University of Groningen, where she leads the Sousa Lab in advancing innovative nanomedicine strategies for brain cancer therapy. Her research focuses on engineering biodegradable nanoparticles and implantable nanovaccines to reprogram the tumor microenvironment and improve clinical outcomes in glioblastoma.
She earned her Ph.D. with dual fellowships (FCT and Fulbright) and pursued postdoctoral training in London, Italy and Switzerland, funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship and a Women-in-Science Fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Internationally recognized, she has received more than a dozen awards, including the MIT Innovators Under 35 Europe distinction, the Kinam Park Exceptional Young Scientist Award from the Controlled Release Society, and selection as a Female Science Talent by the Falling Walls Foundation. She has also been invited to the prestigious Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting and delivered a TEDx talk on the future of early-career scientists.
Beyond her laboratory, Dr. Sousa is committed to equity, integrity, and excellence in science, actively contributing to research policy, grant evaluation, and diversity initiatives within global scientific communities.
